What is a domain name?
A domain name is an Internet address (example register.com): it is similar to a customized license plate or a permanent phone number or address. A domain name also allows you to receive e-mail at a customized e-mail address. If your organization's name is ACME, Inc., you could register the domain name ACME.COM and your e-mail address could be site by visiting "www.acme.com" with their Web browser. These are just a few of the most common uses for a domain name.

What is a URL?
The term URL means Uniform Resource Locator. This is the string of information that lets people locate specific sites on the Internet. A URL is unique -- meaning that no two are exactly alike. It is a description of a computer's location on the Internet much like your home address describes your location within a city. An example of a URL is http://www.windco.com

What are the rules for creating a Domain Name?
A domain name can be up to 26 characters long -- including the characters used to identify the Top Level Domain (.NET, .COM, .ORG, etc.). Domain names are not case sensitive. When entering the Domain Name you want, do not include "www" or "http." You should, however, put .com, .org, .net, .co.uk, .org.uk, .ac, .sh, .ky, .md, .vg, .tc, .ms, .gs or .tf at the end of the Domain Name.

If your first choice is not available, consider looking up the same name with a slight variation, or a different ending.

Example: yourname.com is not available?
Try yourname.net

The only valid characters for a domain name are letters, numbers and a hyphen "-". Other special characters like the underscore "_" or an exclamation mark "!" are NOT permitted.

Can I register a .web, .firm or .shop address with register.com?
.firm, .shop, .web, .arts, .rec, .info and .nom domains are listed under a proposed domain list by the Council of Registrars (CORE). These domains have not yet been approved and are not yet available to be registered. When the domains are approved, register.com plans to offer these domains to our customers. Please continue to check back with register.com periodically and keep up to date with our new services.

What if the name I want to use is already taken?
It means that someone on the Internet has already secured that name for his or her own site, and that name is probably gone. You may try a slight variation on that name, think up a new one, register the same name with a different domain extension or visit us again to check again for another name.

What should I do if I am planning to start an organization in the future but I want to reserve a domain name now?
If you are planning on starting an organization or company but do not have an official name established yet, simply enter your name in the Organization field. Once you have established your organization you can change your organization name and information through Manage My Domain/Domain Manager. With the online interface you can:

  1. Correct a misspelling in the Registrant's name (e.g., typographical errors or transpositions)
  2. Correct an organizational identifier (e.g., Inc., Co., Corp., L.L.C., L.L.P., SA, AG),
  3. Change the Registrant's legal name in our database, or
  4. Transfer the domain name to another party.

If you registered your domain name before June 2, 1999 please visit Network Solutions to make changes to your domain registration record.

Once a domain is registered, who "owns" the domain name?
No one "owns" a domain name registration any more than someone "owns" a telephone number. But it is the registrant to whom the domain name is registered, and who therefore has permission to use the domain name registration. If you would like to know who the registrant is, enter the domain name in the text box on in the check name section of our Domain Registration homepage at: http://www.windcodomains.com. If the domain name shows to be taken, simply click on the link and you will be shown the registrant. The registrant is the person or organization listed at the top of the domain name record. The administrative, technical and billing contacts/agents are individuals or groups whom the organization trusts to handle issues involving the domain name registration record.

To change information about the registrant, such as:

  1. to correct a misspelling in the registrant's name (e.g., typographical errors or transpositions);
  2. to correct an organizational identifier (e.g., Inc., Co., Corp., L.L.C., L.L.P., SA, AG);
  3. to reflect a change to the registrant's legal name; or
  4. to transfer the domain name to another registrant

If you registered your domain name on or after June 2, 1999 please visit register.com's Manage My Domain/Domain Manager or click on "Manage My Domain" on the left navigation bar of register.com to initiate modifications to your domain name.

For domain names registered before June 2, 1999 please visit Network Solutions' Name Change Agreement located at: http://www.networksolutions.com/makechanges/rnca/agreement.html.

I have secured my domain name, how do I publish my pages on the Web at my new address?
Securing a domain name is the first step to establishing your identity on the Web. After registering and paying for a domain name, with the registry service, there are two more steps to take before you can publish your pages on the Internet:

  1. Register your domain at Windco Dodmain Registrations
  2. Create your Web pages. There are several Web authoring tools available on the market such as: Microsoft FrontPage and HomeSite by Allaire that allow you to design your own pages quickly and easily.
  3. Select a hosting company such as Windco.com. Now that you have registered your domain name and created your Web pages, the final step to establishing yourself on the Web is selecting a hosting company. A hosting company serves as the "host" computer that gives the world access to your site via the Internet.
